Some Seed Sources For Recommended Vegetables, Herbs, Fruits, and Berries

Sponsored links:

Finding Suppliers For Cultivars

There is a select but fairly lengthy general list of seedsmen elsewhere on this site; this page is a tabulation of sources for the particular vegetable cultivars we recommend on this site. (We do not here include either herb/spice vendors or fruit/berry vendors--at least not yet.)

This is very definitely not a comprehensive list of all seedsmen who carry any of our recommended cultivars. It is not even a comprehensive list of such seedsmen from our select list of seedsmen. Rather, it is a list of suppliers restricted to a few seedsmen that we happen to order through ourselves; you can see our comments on these and other seedsmen on the seedsman list linked above, but in general these are, we feel, among the better houses. In a few cases of unusual cultivars, none of those houses had the type, and in those cases we have listed at least one house that does have the type in question. But aside from those occasional exceptions, the houses we have drawn on here are:

(This listing is for vegetables only: it does not include herbs, berries, or fruits; we hope to add those soon.)

Each seed-house name is a link to that house's web site (indeed, to the exact page on which that cultivar is to be found). The idea here is simply to show you some satisfactory places the wanted types can be gotten from (or, in a very few cases, to note that the wanted type is hard to find at all).

Remember that besides actuaal seed houses, whether commercial or nonprofit, there are those 11,000+ offerings in the Seed Savers Exchange Seed Savers Yearbook, in which members--usually quite expert gardeners--privately offer seed of particular cultivars that they are growing. Membership in SSE is not just a passport to that delightful Yearbook: it helps support a wonderful and vitally important nonprofit organization doing literally vital work on behalf of all of us. Read more about SSE here.

Note: many of these heirloom types, though well known, are hard to find seed for; the seedsman "Tomato Fest" has an 80% rating on Garden Watchdog, which is good but not what we like to see, but examination of the actual comments suggests that it should be 87% (one person couldn't read the web-site info properly). Since Tomato Fest has all of the heirloom varieties we want, we're trying them, and listing them here.
